Tanabe Chikuunsai III (1940-2014)

The son of Chikuunsai II, Tanabe Hisao Chikuunsai III was born in Sakai (Osaka Prefecture).

A design graduate of Musashino Art University (Tokyo), after his studies he joined the family workshop and trained in the art of bamboo under his father and Tsukayoshi Tadayoshi, one of the disciples of his grandfather Chikuunsai I.

In 1965 one of his works was accepted at the Nitten and acquired by the Japanese government.

His father Chikuunsai II bestowed the name of Shōchiku on him in 1969; he was the second family member to have this name. When he was fifty-one years old, he took up the artist name of Chikuunsai III.

In 1974 his piece entitled Ho, made in yadake bamboo (traditionally used for arrows), was presented at the Nitten and bought by the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo.

His creations have been exhibited in the United States, Korea, New Zealand, Thailand, and Japan.

His œuvre generally distinguishes itself from those of earlier generations by its more contemporary inspiration.
