Sukashi-ajiro openwork plaiting and tomobuchi edging
Trained in Beppu under the master Honda Shōryū, Nakatomi Hajime develops a body of work that shifts our perception of bamboo, revealing its suppleness, lightness, and ability to become almost textile-like.
Created after the birth of his daughter, the Frill: Undulation series explores a sensation of fragile and living emergence. In this work, the openwork sukashi-ajiro plaiting and tomobuchi edging give rise to an undulating form made of folds, transparencies, and suspended movements, as though matter itself were becoming breath.
