“Dragon-Cloud”

A leading figure in contemporary bamboo sculpture, Yonezawa Jirō has developed, over more than forty-five years, a body of work shaped by the tradition of Beppu and by his long-standing dialogue with American Fiber Art. In Ryūun, literally “dragon cloud,” he creates a dense, dynamic form that evokes a cloud stirred by the passage of a dragon. The free, energetic plaiting gives the work a sense of continuous movement. Steel, cane, vine and urushi lacquer reinforce its powerful, organic character.
